For a short time on Wednesday, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale’s new sports website Gallery Sports was hidden from public view.
The site, which features top-flight journalists from Texas and the national media, focuses on Texas sports. It also features Mattress Mack, the furniture magnate who makes spectacular sports bets to offset his furniture promotions. On the site, he offers commentary on upcoming games for his hometown teams – the Astros, Texans and Rockets.
Hidden from public view
For some of Wednesday, Gallerysports.com had a pin-protected wall indicating that it was “hidden” from public view.
The site’s attendant Twitter feed, @gallerysports, which promises “Immediate Insight and Information,” didn’t release a comment during the outage. The most recent post gives a recap of Day 1 of the MLB Division Series.
Gallery Sports throws kitchen sink at the sports fan
As previously reported here at PlayTexas, Gallery Sports throws a lot of content at the viewer at the expense of clarity. Side-scrolling lead-story images, lengthy sidebars and comment threads, and difficult search settings all make the site a less-than-user-friendly experience.
Despite the clutter, the site cranked out some excellent journalism by John McLain and Richard Justice in its first week.
Recently, a new feature offering short video clips of Mack giving hot takes on upcoming games – mostly football – was added to the site. These changes may have created some back end trouble.
There’s also the off chance that McIngvale’s exuberance over the Astros’ walk-off win in Game 1 of the ALDS may have sent a telepathic surge through his site, breaking his little corner of the internet.
